Overview

The Edexcel BTEC Level 1/Level 2 First Award in Health and Social Care is a vocationally related qualification, where learners develop knowledge and understanding by applying their learning and skills in a work-related context. Learners are encouraged to take responsibility for their own learning and to develop skills that are essential for the modern-day workplace.

KS4 Course Outline

The Edexcel BTEC Level 1/Level 2 First Award in Health and Social Care provides an engaging, robust, broad-based introduction to the sector. This qualification brings together learning at levels 1 and 2 to ensure that every learner taking the qualification completes it with a level of understanding and skill on which to build at a later date. It presents knowledge, skills and understanding in a meaningful work-related context, to allow learners to understand theory and application. 

The Qualification focuses on four main units:

  • Human Lifespan Development. (External Exam)
  • Health and Social Care Values. (Internal Assessment  Assignment based)
  • Effective Communication in Health and Social Care.  (Internal Assessment Assignment based)
  • Individual Rights in Health and Social Care.  (Internal Assessment Assignment based).

KS4 Assessment Details

Completed individual assignments will demonstrate your competence within three of the specific areas of study; you will have to meet the expected criteria for each unit in order to achieve the grading of either: Pass, Merit or Distinction at Level 2 or a Level 1 qualification. The fourth area of study has a one hour paper based exam that will be externally marked by Edexcel.

How Will Students Learn?

The Qualification focuses on four main units:

  • Human Lifespan Development. (Exam)
  • Health and Social Care Values. (Assignment based)
  • Effective Communication in Health and Social Care.  (Assignment based)
  • Individual Rights in Health and Social Care.  (Assignment based)

Students have the opportunity to apply their learning through practical skills and activities that reflect those used or found in the workplace. Guest speakers are invited into school from a range of health and social care settings, so learners gain real insight into what it is like to work in the sector.

Other Skills They Will Develop

Students will develop skills that are essential in the work place such as; team working, working from a prescribed brief, working to deadlines, presenting information effectively and accurately completing administrative tasks and processes.

KS4 Homework

Homework will be set on a weekly basis and time spent on this will be dependent on the learning aim of the given unit of work.

Extra Opportunities

Students have the opportunity to attend weekly lunch time sessions supported by the teacher.

Career Opportunities:

This qualification has a core of underpinning knowledge, skills and understanding, and a range of options to reflect the breadth of pathways within a sector. This gives learners the opportunity to:

  • Gain a broad understanding and knowledge of a vocational sector
  • Investigate areas of specific interest
  • Develop essential skills and attributes prized by employers, further education colleges and higher education institutions.

This suite of qualifications provides opportunities for learners to progress to either academic or more specialised vocational pathways.

KS4 How can you support your son/daughter’s progress?

Please ensure all forms that are sent home are fully completed with all information required, signed and returned on time in order for the school to process Health and Safety information effectively.
