History

Overview

The History Department consists of One full time teacher, and Head of Department, Howard Mills, and three part time teachers, Laura Branch, Tom Newell and Tess Hurst.

The subject at KS3 is taught through a series of key questions, and by written assessment at the end of each unit. At KS4 we have a prescribed syllabus to follow and assessments take place every two weeks. Field trips take place in year Seven, Ten and Eleven. Every effort is made to ensure progress is made throughout the years and that history engages, excites and interests the students.

KS3 Assessment Details

All focus questions are assessed as written pieces of work.

How Will Students Learn?

History is a literacy based subject, and we work very hard to develop in the students those literacy based skills. Paragraph structuring and planning essays are crucial skills that we spend a lot of time developing, in conjunction with the English Department. There is also a great deal of content to cover, students are encouraged to develop revision strategies as it is vital they revise for their exams as the higher grade 4 and upwards demand that students have "Sound and Strong" knowledge.

History is a subject blessed with a wealth of visual material, the use of pictures, and documentaries form an important part of how we learn and find out about history. Students are asked to question all sources of information, analyse documents and think for themselves. Their own opinions and interpretations of history form an important part of how we teach the subject.

Other Skills They Will Develop:

Students are taught how to analyse, interpret and explain events and documents. We teach them how to organise their ideas and write them down in a coherent and logical way. Students will be taught how to detect bias, purpose and reliability of source material, a useful life skill.

KS3 How can you support your son/daughter’s progress?

Watch good historical documentaries together, and discuss what you have watched. Follow the news and current events.  Find out what they are doing at the moment, read their books, help them with presentation and organisation of their work. Visit historical sites.

KS4 Course Outline

  • Thematic Study: Crime and punishment, c1250 to present - Three main issues are addressed through the content: 1. The nature and extent of crime. 2. The enforcement of law and order. 3. The punishment of offenders. All three topics start in the Medieval period and go through to the present.
  • British Depth Study: The Norman Conquest 1065 - 1087 - The content of this unit takes the student from before the invasion to the establishment of Norman control. Areas of focus include Anglo-Saxon England, invasion, resistance, castles and control.
  • History around us - Students will undertake a site visit at Cold Habour Mill. They will study the mill's role in the local/national economy, it's rise and fall, working conditions and typicality.
  • Period Study: The making of America 1789-1900 - Students study American expansion 1789 - 1838, the west 1839 - 1860, civil war and reconstruction 1861 - 1871, conflict 1861 - 1877, American culture.
  • World Depth Study: Living under Nazi rule 1933 - 1945 - Students will look at dictatorship, control and opposition, changing lives 1933 - 1939, Germany at war, occupation.

KS4 Assessment Details

Each unit carries 20% of the total marks and is assessed by an external exam.

A04 Analyse, evaluate and make substantial judgements about interpretations, how and why they might differ.

KS4 Homework

Every two weeks there is a new topic to revise for a test.

There are help classes run after school on Wednesdays and Thursdays, this includes revision lessons
There is a field trip to London and Nottingham, as well as a revision booster held over a weekend at KIlve.

Career Opportunities:

History is an important and valuable subject that not only helps students understand the world around them, but provides them with valuable skills that employers need. The ability to organise and collate information, analyse, explain and come to a balanced, rational conclusion, are all useful skills.
