U16 Girls Football County Cup Semi Final
Today the U16 girls football side played in the semi final of the County Cup at home to a very strong Gordano side. To put it into perspective, their U15s lost in the semi final of the national competition last week, such was the size of the challenge the girls faced.
In beautifully sunny conditions Chilton started well, trying to pass and play football against a very high press from Gordano. Some wayward shots from Gordano meant Ava Scobie was not tested but their intent was there. It was Chilton however who took a shock lead as Zoe Mizon combined well with Maddie Hellard on the right to go through one on one with the goal keeper and she slid perfectly before a challenge from the defender and the goal keeper to toe poke the ball into the far corner of the net. A brilliant start! Chilton then spent the next 10 minutes in and around the penalty area as Gordano attacked and shot at will. Chilton's defence worked incredibly hard as the ball was pinged around with ease. It was Chilton who broke again with Mizon's raw pace causing havoc in the Gordano defence, she turned the defender and as she got away was cleverly tripped to ensure she would not go through one on one again. The resulting free kick didn't amount to anything. A defensive error gave Gordano an opportunity to score to make it 1-1 after 20 minutes. A tiring defence allowed their striker too much time as she controlled it, turned and shot low into the corner, Ava Scobie dived and got a brilliant hand on it only to see it roll into the post and over the line for 2-1. A needless free kick was struck powerfully and over Scobie to make it 3-1 at half time.
The second half saw a whingey affair as both sides were committed to tackles and happy to lean in to gain advantages. Chilton threatened on the break occasionally but Gordano played some beautiful football to score at ease at one point. Chilton broke free once again through Mizon who was cleverly bundled over in which Ewelina had a shot saved from the free kick. Morgen Palfrey missed a glorious opportunity as her eyes lit up in front of goal but unfortunately she leaned back to let it sail over the bar. Ava Scobie made some superb saves and this meant the scoreline did not reach double figures.
The final score was 9-1 but the girls battled hard against a brilliant school side. The level of football played was a real eye opener to some of our team and a bench mark of where they should be aiming to be.
