Year 9 Boys Rugby
This evening our Year 9 boys travelled to Haygrove knowing a win would keep them top of the table and secure a semi-final spot with 2 games still to play. Having had a very good training session the night before the boys were confident and ready to put in a good performance.
From the kick off Chilton retrieved the ball deep in Haygrove territory and the ball was moved wide by A Hodge for O Manchip to score with the conversion successful. Chilton stormed forward again and from an attacking line out a set move on the narrow side saw M Bradley storm through the Hyagrove defence and score. The pattern of play continued with D Warren, A Higgins, L Redwood and P Gogolin dominating the ruck area, securing possession and looking dangerous with ball in hand. After good work by the backs A Higgins stormed away to score under the posts. Haygrove hit back and a good passing move saw their centre score under the posts to reduce the arrears. Just before half-time Chilton scored again as O Manchip saw a gap in the defence to dive over the line. At half-time the boys led 28-7.
The second half was a much closer affair as the wind got up and the rain arrived meaning handling became more difficult. Haygrove came out firing and scored a fine try as their winger evaded last ditch tackles to score in the corner. Chilton kept up their aggressive tackling display as A Santos, K Escott, W Stevens and captain O Manchip stopped Haygrove in their tracks. A good spell of pressure saw Haygrove lose control of the ball near their own line and A Higgins took advantage to sneak over. With time running and players from both sides feeling the effect of heavy collisions O Manchip sealed his man of the match performance with the final try to leave Chilton 42-14 winners against one of their closest rivals.
